In the first half of the 20th century, courageous women made a huge mark on the history of the cosmetics industry. Helena Rubinstein, Dr. Nadia Payot – and Mila d’Opitz-Altherr were all pioneering women who became world famous. In1938, the woman from the Swiss canton of Appenzell laid the foundation stone for a skincare company that is now among the global elite of the industry. The success is based on the brand’s own product lines as well as contract production for many internationally renowned luxury cosmetics brands. Women have remained at the helm of the St. Gallen-based company until today, with female leadership now in the third generation. They aim is to convey Swissness and serenity. Closely Linked to Research from the Start
In the 1930s, while searching for skincare solutions for herself, Mila experimented with nurturing substances, finally formulating a hormone-based skin cream – an unheard of innovation for the skincare market of the day.
Working together with a dermatologist and various chemists Mila developed further skincare products that she produced in her own company and sold domestically and abroad, initially under the brand name Milopa. In 1965, to avoid confusion with a similarly named baby food brand, the name changed to that of the founder, «Mila d’Opiz», a brand has come to represent the quintessence of all the experience gathered over decades. The mother company M. Opitz & Co. AG is also well established as an extremely successful manufacturer in the White Label Products sector.
